Norma Irene Christopher (Smith)
August 7, 1924 – August 1, 2020
Our dear sweet mother, passed peacefully into eternal life on August 1, 2020, with her beloved daughter holding her hand.
Just shy of 96 years old, Norma was born August 7, 1924 in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada to Gordon and Jessie (Winton) Smith. She became a U.S. citizen at the age of 10. She was raised in Edina and graduated from Washburn High School. After attending Carleton College, Northfield, MN where she studied Art and Art history, she graduated from Pratt Institute with a degree in Interior and Furniture Design. She also obtained a B.S.in Art Education from the University of MN.
She is preceded in death by beloved husband Robert Christopher and sisters Joyce Steinke and Carol Ligare.
She is survived and will be dearly missed by her children, Bruce Christopher of Hoffman Estates, IL, Maren Christopher (Scott Vergin) of Chanhassen, special AFS daughter, Mabel Lou, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, sister in law Nancy Underdahl, brother in law John MacLennan and many cherished nieces & nephews.
Norma was a cradle Episcopalian and at age 12, with her family, were founding members of St. Stephen’s Episcopal church in Edina. Norma was an active and faithful member there until her passing.
Norma was a lifelong learner, active in AAUW, enjoyed travel and season tickets at the orchestra. She was artistic, an accomplished seamstress, she loved to figure skate, dance and sing. She enjoyed a good ice cream cone and a cup of Earl Grey tea, in a china tea cup of course! She was an active church ministries volunteer. She enjoyed long lasting friendships from childhood. She deeply loved her family, treasuring each moment spent with them and they loved and cherished her. Most importantly she lived a life defined by her faith. She was a quiet witness of God’s love and grace.
The family thanks the wonderful staff at Trouvaille Memory Care Suites who so lovingly and graciously cared for Norma with compassion and tenderness. Their support of her and her daughter in her last days was truly a gift.
There will be a private creekside service with interment in the St. Francis Memorial Garden at St. Stephen’s.
