Robert Joseph VanLaningham
July 26, 1958 – May 9, 2020
Bob VanLanigham, 61 Brooklyn Park MN, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home surrounded by family and friends on Saturday May 9, 2020.
Born July 26, 1958 in Independence IA, Bob was the son of David VanLaningham and Evelyn VanLaningham Ohrt.
Bob moved to Minneapolis area in 1991, where he met his lifelong partner Dan in 1992.
Bob worked several years as a behavioral specialist within the Minneapolis School System prior to starting his 22-year career working for the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office, Child Protection Division. Bob dedicated his professional life to the wellbeing of children and their families. He also cared for his colleagues with a constant supply of food. It is said that many people gained 10 pounds within the first year of working with Bob. Bob also provided much needed social support for his colleagues by hosting annual gatherings at his home in Brooklyn Park.
Bob enjoyed his home life by designing a relaxing welcoming home and garden for social gatherings, hosting incredible pool parties, having enough homemade food to feed the entire neighborhood.
He also collected carousels. The music of a carousel always put him in a happy place and a smile on his face. Bob had a huge heart and loved his family and friends deeply. He is missed greatly by all who had an opportunity to know him, especially Maxi (the cat). Bob, keep that smile on your face and that song in your heart. We will all be together again someday.
Bob is survived by lifelong partner Dan Burkart, daughter Jennifer VanLaningham, grand children Tay and Addie. Father David, brother Terry, sister Eva (Lorenz), many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was proceeded in death by his mother Evelyn, brother Harold and son Joshua.
A celebration of Bob’s life will be held at a later date when conditions allow such an event. If you wish memorials they are requested in the form of a donation to St, Joseph’s Home for Children Emergency Shelter (cctwincities.org).
