George Douglas “Doug” Laing

May 7, 1938 – May 12, 2020
Beloved George Douglas Laing, age 82, passed away in Minneapolis, suddenly and of natural causes; on Tuesday, May 12, 2020. Preceded in death by parents George and Kathryn, brothers James and Christopher and niece, Kathryn Laing. Doug is survived by sister-in-law Judy, nephews Jack, Jim and George Christopher; and nieces Ann, Amy and Mary. Doug was born on May 7th, 1938 in Minneapolis and lived in the house that his father built right next to the Mississippi River. He moved with his family to the Murray Hill area in Excelsior, MN in 1945. He lived a full and enjoyable life. After graduating from Minnetonka High, he served in the Army and then studied graphic design. He later worked as a traveling salesman around the Upper Midwest, lived for a spell in San Francisco (his favorite climate), guarded masterpieces at the Walker Art Center and drove for the Red and White Taxi company in Minneapolis for over 30 years. Doug spent substantial quality time with good friends and stayed close with his brothers too; attending all family holidays and special occasions, savoring breakfast at spots like the Egg & I and CC Club, grilling, watching football and later driving several times to Oregon and California for family gatherings after Chris and family had relocated. He loved to read the newspaper and old issues of Harper’s Magazine and the New Yorker. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered. Celebration of life to be held at a later date.
