Jack Vance Wallinga

December 31, 1923 – May 10, 2020
Age 96 of Arden Hills, slipped away peacefully on May 10, 2020, predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Connie (Otten). Born December 31, 1923. Jack grew up in St. Paul, the only child of Marie (Stern) and John Wallinga, both physicians. As a kid, he played piano and began a lifelong involvement with Scouting, becoming an Eagle Scout, Scoutmaster, and co-founder of the Pine Bend Association. At age 16, he entered the U of M, graduating with both Bachelors and Medical degrees, but not before meeting Connie, a nursing student. The two married after Jack finished internship in Cleveland, followed by psychiatry residency in Minnesota, and 2 years in Oakland with the Navy. The couple settled in Roseville, MN, where Jack’s psychiatric career included private practice, and helping found and staff then-new Minneapolis Children’s Hospital. From 1980 to 2012, they lived as empty-nesters in downtown Minneapolis, frequenting the Guthrie, Minnesota Orchestra, MIA and Central Lutheran Church. Jack loved traveling with Connie, and his slide shows were legendary. Besides travel, his other passions included tribal art and fly fishing. Survivors include children Jean Keller, Gary (Eve), Gail (Susan) and David Wallinga (Elizabeth); grandchildren Kim Rettke (Cory), Chris Keller (Kelly), Nissa Pearson, and Dane, Lucia, and Julia Wallinga, plus six great-grandchildren. We deeply appreciate the love and compassion our parents received living at Presbyterian Homes. Memorials to the Pine Bend Scout Foundation, c/o 4874 Cooper Ridge Dr., Woodbury, MN 55129.
