Block, Sandra Jean

May 5, 1943 – April 5, 2019
Age 75 of Minneapolis.Block, Dr. Sandra Jean Sandra Jean Block passed away on April 5, 2019. Sandy was born on May 5, 1943, in Gothenburg, Nebraska, to Lawrence and Pat Block. She grew up a farm girl and attended high school in Gothenburg, where she was valedictorian of the class of 1961. Education became her career, and she broke new ground when she became one of Minnesota’s first female high school principals in 1980 in Lake Park. Sandy’s passion for helping students never waned, and her colleagues remember her intelligence, drive, and insistence on doing right by her students. Former students at every level credit her with helping them through rough patches in their lives and reaching their full potentials. Sandy married Bill Garton in 1964, and they had two children, Jon and Chandra. Sandy had another child, Anneke, with her second husband Lee Hanke, whom she married in 1974. In 2006, Sandy moved to Minneapolis to be closer to her family. All four grandkids loved their quirky “Eema” very much. Sandy is survived by her children, Jon Hanke (Chris Wick), Chandra Hanke (Marty Dickrell), and Anneke (Tapio) Haku all of Minneapolis, MN; grandchildren Aila, Jackson and Sabrina Haku and Jasper Hanke; brothers Larry (Linda) Daniels-Block of Colorado Springs, CO, and Ron (Jean) Block of Pittman, NJ; and sisters-in-law Deanne (Mark) Saari of Rush City, MN, Donnelle Casler of Dardenne Prairie, MO, and Pat (John) Moon of Beatrice, NE. A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 4, at 1 p.m. at Salem English Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, followed by a Celebration of Life at 4 p.m. at the American Legion Giant Valley Post 234. Feel free to wear bright colors to honor Sandy’s exceptional approach to life. Memorials can be given to the Wellstone Muscular Dystrophy Center (U of MN) or the Crane Trust (Nebraska).
