Berube, Joan Carol (nee Butler)

Berube, Joan Carol (nee Butler)

December 25, 1927 – May 19, 2019
Age 91 of Minneapolis, passed away on May 19, 2019 at Jones Harrison Residence in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She was preceded in death by brothers Rodney and Bud, and sister Charlotte Ware and son Tom Berube, as well as her beloved husband of 50 years, Larry Berube. She is survived by brother Mert Ware, and many nieces and nephews, especially Bridget Frederico (with whom she often enjoyed formal afternoon tea at the Brown Palace in Denver). She and Larry shared four children, Tom and Tim Berube, Laura Berube, and Richard Voelbel, six grandchildren & twelve great grandchildren. Joan always said she couldn’t believe that she got to be a great grandmother! Joan had an interesting life, beginning on the East Coast near Philadelphia and then New Jersey. At one point she and her sister and brothers and her young son decided to move west looking for a new start. They ended up in the wild wild west of Colorado and greatly enjoyed the outdoor life and the beautiful Rockies. It became her home in her heart. She met her dear Larry Berube in Boulder and they had a long life together moving to Minnesota and then to Utah and finally back to Colorado where they retired. Larry worked hard at teaching her golf and bridgethe bridge worked really well, but the golf – not so much. In her last years she decided to move back to Minnesota to be with the Minnesota contingent of the family. She lived at Jones Harrison Residence and was well known as the champion (pure luck?) of the weekly Bingo game! Truth be told, she also enjoyed the occasional trip to the casino to play the slots. She was very active at JHR, taking part in the many activities, exercise classes, and worship services – both the non-denominational and the Roman Catholic, but the Roman Catholic faith was always central to her life. Just days before she passed, she was intentional about thanking her many caregivers for the kindness and good care she had received. She was known as Nana to grandchildren and great grandchildren who got quite a kick out of celebrating her birthday on Christmas Day. Services will be at Jones Harrison Residence at 3700 Cedar Lake Ave., Minneapolis 55416, to be held at 10:30 AM, Thursday, June 13. In lieu of flowers, memorials appreciated to Jones Harrison Residence. (Published in the Star Tribune June 2, 2019)
