Brumbaugh, Dorotha Louise (nee Karns)

Age 94 of Minneapolis. Dorotha (Dorothy or Dot) L. Brumbaugh 94, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, passed away at her assisted living apartment in Min- neapolis on Friday, March 8, 2019. Dorothy was born February 15, 1925, in Ohio City, Ohio, and was the daughter of Frank and Winona Karns. She had two siblings: Robert and Jeannette. Dot graduated high school and attended the Michael Reese Hospital Nursing Program. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (RN) in 1946 and began a lifelong career in healthcare. Dot met and married James (Jim) W. Brumbaugh in 1947 while living in Chicago, IL. Initially, they settled in LaGrange, Illinois before moving to Minneapolis Minnesota in 1957. They were long-time residents in the Kenwood neighborhood and were married for 51 years. Dot raised four children while working as an RN at Hennepin County General and University of Minnesota Hospitals as well as other private duty assignments. Her experience and advocacy resulted in a landmark legal decision protecting private duty nursing staff as employees related to workers’ compensation benefits. Dot enjoyed hosting new arriving foreign students at the family home as they acclimated to studies at the University of Minnesota and the local area. Her interests in other cultures resulted in travel adventures throughout the world including Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America, South and North America. She loved history, purchasing and restoring antiques. She was an active, long- term member at Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church participating in bible study, Steeple People, Couple’s Club, book clubs, etc. Another favorite activity was hosting social hours with family and friends. She dearly loved attending the weekly “Happy Hours” at the Jones Harrison Residence. Dot was predeceased by her parents, her brother and sister, husband, two grandchildren and one great grandchild. She is survived by her children: Richard “Dick” (Mary Jo) Brumbaugh – KS, John (Annette) Brumbaugh – MN, David (Maureen) Brumbaugh – MN, Joanne (Frank) Walles – TX, as well as 8 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Her family wishes to express gratitude to the residents and staff at Jones Harrison Residence, Fairview Health-Gerontology Services, Brighton Hospice Care who provided care and comfort to Dot. It was Dot’s wish to be cremated. A celebration of her life will be held at Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church in Minneapolis on Saturday, May 4, 2019 at 10:30 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church, Jones Harrison Residence, Minneapolis Women’s Club or Brighton Hospice Care.
