Thayer, Matthew Henson

Age 89 of Brooklyn Center, passed away peacefully at his home on Mar. 4, 2017. Matthew Henson Thayer was born in Chicago, IL on March 9, 1927. He attended Willard Elementary, Englewood High and graduated from Tilden Tech in Chicago, IL. He was drafted into the US Army during WWII, attended the University of Minnesota and Metro State U. He worked in various fields throughout his professional career; engineer, technical writer, draftsman; Model Cities in Mpls: MAO Assistant Director; Powderhorn Development Corporation: Director; Model Cities in St. Paul: Director, HELP Development Corporation; Control Data, Thayer & Thayer Consulting, and MSP Airport Commission. He is preceded in death by his parents, Alonzo & Nannette; sister, Theresa; brother, William; son, Paul; many classmates and friends. He is reunited with his grandchildren, Jalen and Breanna Thayer. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Irene Carol Thayer; his children, Eric, Mark (Peggy), Barbara, Michelle, Lance (Jennifer), Scott (Maria) and Ryan; grandchildren, Nicole, Adrienne, Dominic, Mario, Bailey, Samuel, Maya and Marisol; sister-in-law, Charlene Thayer; nieces, Karen (Ken) and Diane (Harold); daughter-in-law, Jacqueline, lifelong friend, Marcellus Burke; many family and friends. He was a member of the Episcopal Church throughout his life (St. Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral-Mpls); Special thanks to Sally and John Cunningham who “brought the mass to us”; The Reverend Lowell B. Johnson who gave the last rites and conducted the funeral service. Isaiah 40:8 Though the grass withers and the flower wilts, the word of our God stands forever.
