Swanson, Violet Gurtrude

February 5, 1919 – March 25, 2017
Age 98 of Spicer. Violet Gurtrude Swanson was born February 5, 1919 in Airlie, Minnesota. She was the daughter of John Swanson and Elizabeth (Routh) Swanson. At the age of one, Violet and her family moved to Pennock, Minnesota.  She grew up in Pennock, attended rural school there, and later completed the 9th grade in Willmar, Minnesota.  At the early age of ten, Violet’s father passed away, leaving her mother and her eight young siblings behind on the family farm. To further impact this difficult situation, the Great Depression arose.  The family had the enormous responsibility of trying to keep the farm in operation and the family together. Violet played a vital role here. She continued working on the farm, milking cows, and doing field work. During the winter months she was a waitress at local restaurants and worked at the Pennock Creamery.  She later was employed by Wonderalls as a seamstress and spent over 12 years with Willmar Poultry.  She retired from that company   in the early 1990’s.  She moved off the farm in 1977, purchased a home in Willmar, and resided there until 2010. She spent five years at Centennial Square in Willmar and has been living the last two years with her nephew in Spicer, Minnesota. Violet was a lifelong member of Mamrelund Lutheran Church. She passed on March 25, 2017 at Grace Living Community of Glen Oaks in New London, Minnesota.  She is survived by several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
She will always be remembered for her kindness, unending love, and dedication to her family and friends.  God Bless her memory.  Funeral services will be held at Mamrelund Lutheran Church, Pennock, Minnesota on Saturday, April 1, 2017 at 11:00 a.m.  Visitation is scheduled one hour prior to service. Interment will follow at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Pipestone, Minnesota.
