Crane, Stephen Donald

June 30, 1946 – June 4, 2017
Age 70 of St. Paul.passed away peacefully at Our Lady of Peace near his home in St Paul, Minnesota, early Sunday June 4, surrounded by loving family and friends. He is survived by his devoted wife of 20 years Susan Crane; and beloved children, sons Jeffery and Matthew, and daughter Mendi Crane Eymard and son-in-law Anthony Eymard and a community of close friends. He was preceded in death by parents Donald V. Crane and Dorothy Van Wormer and siblings Michael Crane and Patricia Last. Born and raised in Tulsa, OK, Stephen worked as a successful photojournalist for 25 years and was a graduate of the New Mexico Military Institute and Oklahoma State University. He moved to St. Paul in 1997, and worked tirelessly for the past 20 years as a master’s level clinician for both the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation and The Retreat. He was an avid reader, loved to cook, spending time with his dogs and listening to music. Stephen was loved and adored by all who knew him and through his example helped countless individuals find a path to recovery from addiction. He believed firmly in the inner child in all of us and that his real purpose on earth was to “be of maximum service to God and the people about us.” A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 10th, 2017 at The Retreat at 1221 Wayzata Boulevard East, Wayzata, MN 55391. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to The Retreat Elder Program in the name of Stephen D. Crane. (Published in the Star Tribune on June 6, 2017)
