Brown, Harriet Isobel

Age 88 of of Whipholt, MN, died Thu, Apr. 7, 2016 in Savage, MN. Born Oct. 17, 1927 in Willmar, MN. She graduated from the U of MN in 1950 with a BS in Medical Technology. She married Richard Carl Brown in 1957 and “retired” in 1965 to raise her two children, Richard Carl Brown, Jr. and Dale Eric Brown. Later, she advocated for children in Guardian ad Litem, participated in township government, and served on the board of the Leech Lake Area Watershed Foundation. Fiercely independent, she lived her life on her terms and was loved and admired by family and friends. An excellent cook and baker, she was honored with the name bakwezhigan ikwe (bread lady) by tribal elder Emma Bear. Survived by her sons and by her brother, Eugene Russel Hillerman, she was preceded in death by her husband. Per her request, there will be no services. Celebrations of life will be held with family and friends. Memorial donations may be made to the Leech Lake Area Watershed Foundation. (Published in the Star Tribune on April 9, 2016)
