Wingfield, Diane Gilbert (nee Reissner) “Skippy”
June 29, 1928 – April 19, 2015
Age 86, of Birchwood Village Went to the Happy (Bargain) Hunting Grounds April 19. She loved finding a deal and was an inaugural SPPP Store Trooper. A child of the Depression, she reused, re-purposed, recycled long before it was cool. Regaled her family with stories of growing up on the Mississippi in Hastings–working in the family meat market, rescuing furry critters, and playing at the Humm’s Chinese laundry with best friend Carla Reichenburg. Survived two bouts of rheumatic fever as a child to marry Duke in 1953, then coaxed another 62 years of adventures out her frail heart. She traveled the world over. Despite the allure of Paris, she was happy to always come home to Birchwood. Never bored a day in her life, she was a dedicated philatelist and long-time volunteer treasurer for St John’s Episcopal Church Women, Finders Keepers Antique Club and Birchwood Community Club. She loved Scrabble and killer seven letter words; bridge not so much. She taught her kids to think independently, but failed to teach them to appreciate Shakespeare or beef liver. Predeceased by husband of 52 years, Harold “Duke”; survived by children David (Alice Roberts), Jeff (Ellen) and Mary; grandchildren, Sarah (Eric), Kierna (Jeff), Liam (Stephie), Patrick, and Max; great grandchildren Otto and Cael; brother Fred Reissner and roommates Jacques LeMieux and Buster Brown. Special thanks to friends Claudia and Greg Beckman for their incredibly generous care and support in Mom’s last months. Memorial Service 10 AM Thursday, April 23, St John in the Wilderness, 2175 First St, White Bear Lake, MN. Memorials preferred to Animal Ark, Birchwood Community Club or donor’s choice.
