Smebakken, Theodore Bryan

October 14, 1933 – June 23, 2015
Age 81 of St. Paul, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on 6/23/15. Preceded in death by parents Selmer & Velma, sister Bonnie Lou, former wife Susan, and children Peter & Nansi. Survived by siblings Clay, Sharon, Joy, Bruce, & Lessi, and sons Bryan & Andrew. Following public school in Hot Springs, South Dakota, Ted earned a B.A. from Carleton College in 1955 where he met the love of his life, Sue Kennedy. His senior year, he was named Captain of the Carleton Football Team which went undefeated and won the Mid-west Conference Championship. He was awarded honorable mention as a half back on the Little All American Football Team. Ted served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957. He went on to work for the Minneapolis Star as a political writer and then as an assistant city editor, become Governor Anderson’s Press Secretary, and become Director of the Metropolitan Council’s Public Information Office. In 1989, he opened his antique shop, Peter’s Oldies but Goodies. Truly a community presence, Ted’s shop saw countless conversations about politics, sports, fishing, and life. He took time with any who crossed his path. His gruff presence, wry humor and smile will be missed by all and sundry, from family and friends to the many who frequented the corner of Selby & Fairview. A graveside service will be held for family and close friends at 11:30 on 7/18/15 at Fairview Cemetery in Stillwater. All are welcome to come for a celebration of Ted’s life at 4:00 on 7/18/15 at Cahoots, 1562 Selby Ave., St. Paul. In lieu of memorials, please donate in Ted’s name to an organization of your choice.
