Nelson, Edmund Kelmer
August 2, 1929 – October 1, 2014
Age 85 of White Bear Lake, departed on Oct.1, 2014. Ed had a distinguished career in hospital administration and consulting highlighted by service on various church and hospital boards, and punctuated by charitable work overseas. A graduate of the University of Minnesota School of Hospital Administration, his career included various leadership positions in hospitals and consulting firms in St. Paul and Minneapolis, MN. In 1963-65 he supervised construction of a hospital in Phoebe Liberia, for the Lutheran Board of World Missions, accompanied by his wife, Marlys and his children Betsy, David and Suzie. In 1991-92 he represented Project Hope to negotiate construction of a pediatric hospital in Shanghai, China. In 1992, Ed and Marlys retired to Brookings, SD, where he continued working for about 10 more years with various hospitals and clinics. He is survived by wife, Marlys; children, Betsy (David Thorson), David (Gloria), and Suzie (Steve Pagel); grandchildren, Tague, Sonja and Berit Thorson, Alex Nelson, Dan (Kathleen) and Chris Babich; and great granddaughter Brynn Babich; sister, Martha Swenson; and many other loving family and friends. Services will be held in Brookings, SD. Memorials should be donated to Alzheimer’s research.
